Vino Noceto Zinfandel 2008

The Sierra foothills have proven to be an excellent place for growing Zinfandel. Known for their delicious Italian varietals, Vino Noceto also produces a great Zinfandel! The epitome of Foothill old-vine Zinfandel – dust and spice with complex, intense fruit. The Original Grandpere Vineyard is reputedly the world’s oldest, documented producing Zinfandel vineyard, situated behind Renwood Winery in Plymouth, California – dating back to the 1860’s. This 2008 vintage is a dark ruby color and its complex bouquet is full of rich, generous aromas of raspberry, vanilla and white pepper, with blasts of sweet cocoa and nutmeg. It provides an incredible depth of flavors including intense berry fruit, black cherry and dark bitter chocolate. It has rich, chalky tannins and a smooth but intense finish.

Marcucci Farms Zinfandel 2007

Marcucci Farms & Fava Brothers Vineyard began as the dream of two Italian immigrants, Martino and Lorenzo Fava. They left their home in Lucca, journeying to San Francisco in the early 1880s, and eventually settled in the Russian River Valley on forty acres with a view to Mount St. Helena, a dormant volcano named “Sleeping Woman” by Native Americans. Six generations later and the land is still being farmed by the same family. The 2007 Marcucci Farms Zinfandel, Fava Brothers Vineyard is garnet red with aromas of cherries, raspberries, and blackberries. It has a smooth palate with juicy cherries and a touch of chocolate. The structure is balanced with smooth tannins across the palate and finish. “The combination of old vines planted as far back as 1922 along with vines from the 1960’s and the year 2000 creat a can’t miss blend that belongs on every Zin lover’s table.

Quivira Zinfandel 2009

With a classic Dry Creek profile, the 2009 Quivira Zinfandel has great depth, with deep, dark red and black fruit flavors. Hold another 3-5 years (through 2015) to see where a little age takes our star. A truly fantastic food partner, this wine is the soul mate of just about anything off the grill. Carol Shelton Monga Zinfandel 2007

After graduating with a degree in enology from UC Davis, Carol Shelton worked at renowned cellars and with industry giants like Andre Tchelistcheff and Robert Mondavi. Her wonderful touch creates the most wonderful Zinfandels, as evidenced by the 2007 Carol Shelton Monga Zinfandel! Located in the Cucamonga Valley in southern California 70 miles inland from Los Angeles, Jose Lopez Vineyard was planted in 1918 for "packing grapes" to ship to home winemakers in Chicago and the East. These old Zinfandel vines struggle in the near desert-like conditions; with rocky-sandy soil that holds very little water. After nine decades, they have only grown to about 18 inches tall, and have just a few tiny fist-sized clusters on each vine. Through vineyard owner, Don Galleano’s dedicated efforts; this vineyard passed the rigid CCOF standards in 2004, and is officially organically grown. This wine is packed with very bright pomegranate-wild cherry fruit, brown sugary-caramel oak, and fragrant Asian spices. Very mouthfilling!

Although the vines were near 50 years old, the 2005 Joseph Swan Zinfandel still showed that simple pure berry fruit character. Valdez Family 2007 “Lancel Creek” Zinfandel

The Valdez Family vineyards are planted on a beautiful rolling hillside near Occidental, a unique little just a few minutes from us. Ulises Valdez discovered a vineyard equally as unique with varied micro-climates and soils. On the very top of its ridge, was rich reddish soil with a southern sun exposure protected from the coastal winds that just cried out for Zinfandel. He surrendered to the cry and planted a couple of acres of the 100-year-old St. Peters cloned vines. The results are a delicately well-balanced Zinfandel, rich in varietal character, a tribute to the Valdez family passion for the vineyards. The 2007 “Lancel Creek” Zinfandel is simply awash in rich oak, sweet plums and ripe blackberries and offers immense immediate appeal, but its extravagance comes with balance and structure enough to guarantee another four or five years of wholly enjoyable drinking.

Jelly Jar Zinfandel 2009

A shared dream of husband and wife team, Andy and Shannon Pestoni, Jelly Jar marks a return to early California winemaking, when Italian immigrants crafted food-friendly wines to enjoy around the family table – most often out of jelly jars. Long before Napa Valley became the wine destination we know today, these winemakers planted backyard vineyards and enlisted family members to harvest and crush grapes. As a fourth-generation winemaker, whose roots run deep in the Napa Valley, Andy inherited his ancestors’ love of wine and crafts Jelly Jar with profound understanding. He knows how to enhance the unique character of grapes from single vineyard sites he has hand-chosen. The 2009 Jelly Jar Zinfandel produces aromas and flavors of jammy red fruits, pomegranates and strawberry with hints of spice. A food friendly wine to be enjoyed with your next meal. 514 cases produced.

Graziano 2006 Zinfandel, Eddie Graziano Vineyard

The fruit for the Graziano 2006 Zinfandel, Eddie Graziano Vineyard comes from a vineyard farmed by Greg Graziano’s crazy cousin, Eddie Graziano. This vineyard is located on benchlands of the Capella District located north of Ukiah. The vines are 36 years old and are planted in white clay soil. This vineyard has been in the Graziano family since 1918 and was first planted to grapes by Greg and Eddie’s grandfather, Vincenzo Graziano. Edmeades Mendocino  Zinfandel 2008

The 2008 Edmeades Mendocino Zinfandel is a little different from past vintages. Instead of being dominated by cherry aromas, this leans more towards a mixed bowl of berries. The other interesting point is an aroma like a rustic mountain cabin with fresh red meat and spices being prepared for dinner and then freshly baked wild berry pies for dessert.
The tannins are soft and supple, but the acidity comes through with a bit more acid structure than in past vintages and stays with you till the cows come home. They always add a little Syrah and Petite Sirah for the mid palate, filling in the hole of the donut, but this year it is a little more pronounced in the flavors and aromas. With aging the wine should evolve into a very layered and complex Zinfandel, with toast and spice from the oak picking up in intensity and the creaminess becoming more apparent after a few years. 90 POINTS – ROBERT PARKER!!!

Mauritson Family Rockpile Ridge Zinfandel 2010

Many people make wine from the famous Rockpile Ridge Vineyard, but the Mauritson Family has owned and farmed the vineyard since 1868. The Rockpile Ridge Vineyard is located at nearly 1,200 ft elevation in the Rockpile appellation. In 2006 they harvested fruit from all nine blocks of Zinfandel in the Rockpile Ridge Vineyard. The blocks are picked at different times and ferment separately to insure the integrity and uniqueness of the individual blocks. Working with nine amazingly distinct blocks is a winemaking dream come true, and is what makes the Rockpile Ridge Zinfandel so spectacular. The newly released 2010 Rockpile Zinfandel features bright notes of ripe blackberry and raspberry, complemented by hints of vanilla, black pepper, and minerals on the nose. Bright fruit dominates the front palate, giving way to a lush mouth feel and ample tannins. The finish is prototypical of Rockpile, long and focused. Extremely limited!

Edmeades Zinfandel, Zeni Vineyard 2006
The Edmeades Zeni Zinfandels are almost always old-world style wines. The 2006 has a lot of earthiness and dark brooding aromas that are not often found in Zinfandel. Deep raspberries, cassis and creamy oak embody an old-world funkiness of smoked meats, cedar box and forest. This is a powerhouse wine: concentrated and intense — a dark, brooding beast of a wine with layers of funk. It should be reserved only for wild nights when the moon is full.

Edmeades Zinfandel, Shamrock Vineyard 2007
The Shamrock Vineyard is new to us and Edmeades has once again made a wonderful Zin from this vineyard. This wine has a bit of a split personality. From the young vines we get a healthy dose of youthful angst – dark dense and brooding, kinda like your 15-year-old nephew. But on the flip side it shows a mature, powerful body structure – wise beyond its years. The combination is intense. Look for an overload of wild blueberries, dark chocolate and dried cherries, with an underbelly of vanilla bean, toast and spice. This is a true mountain Zin.

  Porter Bass Zinfandel 2007
Floral aromas of orange blossom and nasturtium combine with nutmeg, cinnamon and green peppercorns.  On the palate the wine shows distinct briary qualities along with flavors of citrus oil and mint.  The wine has a long soft finish of balsawood and spice. Luke Bass, winemaker, started off his winemaking career at Flowers under the tutelage of Greg LaFolette and did some stints at Hirsch and Tandem as well.  The logo of the bee and grasshopper has a story that is interesting too! Luke’s mother has always been the one who drives the tractor and works in the field and thus is represented by the busy bee. His father is a practicing architect and artist has always been represented by the musical grasshopper. As biodynamic farmers they embrace the insect world and the help they give us.

  Carol Shelton Karma Zinfandel, 2006
Carol Shelton’s 2006 Karma Zinfandel is so named because of an arrangement between her and the Rues who own the vineyard on Wood Road – she also makes their delicious wine!  We love to just drink this Zin for its lush juicy fruit and the layers of interesting spice and earthy richness. Full of freshly-ground black pepper aromas and some nice cedary-spicy oak components, it has a rich creamy mouthfeel despite its firm tannic backbone. This vintage shows a touch of gaminess that we find quite reminiscent of a nice Cotes du Rhone. That wild note is beautifully compatible with game meats, especially duck, or actually with any grilled meats. We also had a nice paring which surprised us—Alaskan halibut with a porcini mushroom sauce.  670 cases produced.

This proprietary cuvee hails from a series of old vine vineyards located on the eastern edge of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Head-trained and dry-farmed all, these vineyards yield very minimally allowing for intensely flavored fruit that produce wines of amazing concentration and varietal identity. Each vineyard which comes to the blend and adds something - one brambly fruit, the other backbone and spice, the other depth and concentration.  Together these vineyards create a wine that will remind all of us why winemakers engage the four-wheel drive, and then hike through the worst poison oak to uncover these gems that have nearly been forgotten to the outside world.  Deep ruby in color with a just a touch of purple invites you into aromas of ripe brambleberries, raspberry, loganberry and boysenberry, with accents of black pepper and vanilla.  On the mouth, you’ll find a full-bodied wine, with a very supple palate. You'll again encounter the rich brambleberry notes especially boysenberry complemented by soft vanilla owing to long-term aging in small oak cooperage.

  C G DiArie "Southern Exposure" Zinfandel, 2006

Most of you are familiar with C G DiArie wines.  The man, who we call Captain Crunch, because of his many years in food science, has put his experience and expertise into creating fantastic wines.  The “Southern Exposure” designation for their wines denotes that they feel the wine has very special qualities.  The 2006 Southern Exposure Zinfandel was made from grapes from the Original Grand Pere Vineyard.  The 2006 “Southern Exposure” Di Arie Zinfandel is a complex and elegant wine. On the nose it has a rich fruity character of dark berries combined with spicy notes and hints of black and white pepper. On the palate the dark berry flavors quickly crescendo to layers of black cherry, plum and cassis. Some of the flavors characteristic to Zinfandel as white and black pepper and brier are combined with black current (cassis) and plum which give the wine a hint of sweetness. The finish has a spicy character with the cardamom background making this wine very exotic. This well balanced wine with its unusually long finish fills your mouth without being tannic. The 2005 “Southern Exposure” Zinfandel has the elegance which compares to a well made Pinot Noir.  1203 cases made.

  Graziano Kazmet Vineyard Zinfandel, 2006

The Graziano 2006 Kazmet Vineyard Zinfandel comes from a 40-year old Zinfandel vineyard is farmed by Leila Kazimi and Neal Mettler on the western foothills of Redwood Valley in Mendocino County. Gravelly loam soils and the excellent exposure of this vineyard combine to consistently produce grapes that are intense and ripe. Eighteen months of barrel ageing in 30% new French and American oak has soften the wine and added complexity to the beautiful berry aromas and jammy flavors of blackberry, earth and spice. This wine has a deep purple color, smooth tannins and a peppery finish that is elegant and long lasting.  This wine makes an ideal accompaniment to barbecued chicken, roast beef, and grilled steak or lamb.

  Edmeades Chase Vineyards Zinfandel, 2005
Think cherries … loads of ’em. Chocolate-covered cherries, dried Bing cherries, candied cherries, perfumed cherries.   Armida Poizin 2008
As she stands in the clearing, the cold wind dances through the trees, swirling her golden mane over her diaphanous, silken black gown. The full moon melts into the paleness of her skin. As she stirs the cauldron of Zinfandel she chants an other worldly incantation. From vials as old as the echoes of time she adds minute pinches of her ancestry. Her slender fingers rub together as the grains fall, releasing their magic as they touch the fermenting must. On her face is the look of both good and evil, of love and hate, of life and sex and all that stirs you. What is this unearthly potion? It is Poizin, the wine to die for. Not quite deadly, this delightful Poizin is blended to be soft, supple, and ready to enjoy NOW. The grapes come from Dry Creek Valley. Adorned with a skull and crossbones, pair this bottle up with Armida’s 2008 Antidote Pinot Gris (see our Other Whites page) and you’ll have a great gift idea! Bright fruit flavors are carried on a bed of soft tannins. Oooh, spooky.

  Tofanelli Zinfandel 2007, Napa Valley
Vince and Pauline Tofanelli enjoyed a splendid crop from these 50
year-old Zinfandel vines in 2006. While the yield for the
Tofanelli Vineyard 2007 was smaller than normal, the long hang
time resulted in perfectly ripened fruit -- small berries of
near-ideal sugar/acid balance that were bursting with flavor. The
wine is dark and intense -- the way we like Zinfandel to be -- and
there’s an engaging spicy component that makes it particularly
attractive to drink now. 500 cases produced.
