 Seabiscuit Superfecta 2006
The story of Seabiscuit lives on in the heart of America. Everyone loves the tale of this stocky, knobby-kneed racehorse who triumphed over adversity to become one of the greatest champions of the 20th century. During the 1930s, as America struggled to overcome the Great Depression, the determined spirit of this unlikely victor reflected the mood of the nation. In 1940, Seabiscuit was retired to a ranch in Mendocino County's Redwood Valley, where his memory inspires the winemaking endeavors of the Dreyer Family, winemakers. The 2006 Seabiscuit Superfecta is an exceptional red wine blend of four classic varieties. The name, Superfecta, is a term to predict the first four finishers in correct sequence within a race. Their objective is to produce a proprietary true super quality wine comprised primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon with nuances gained with the addition of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. All these varieties develop mouth-filling fruit flavors, elegance and finesse from Mendocino County. The wine has deep purple color, concentrated ripe fruit aromas and flavors, with medium-to-robust body.  Justin Isosceles 2007
The 2007 Justin Isosceles has also just been released. This wine offers an opaque, dense purple-black core with barely perceptible color change to the rim, indicating extraordinarily high extract and viscosity. The nose is variable over a several minute review: black and blue fruit, firm but inviting oak notes of cinnamon and nutmeg, and a sense of just-roasted dark-roast coffee beans. Later, you’ll find a note of dark cocoa, a dash of black pepper and a drop of vanilla. The palate reveals an immensely flavored wine, repeating the black fruit intensity and powerful tannins typical of this brilliant vintage. The finish is stately, regal and long. This gorgeous Isosceles is the most cellar-worthy since the legendary 1997.

 FOURTEEN 2005
It’s the sum of the parts: the parts are great, but the sum is even better. That’s the concept behind the 2005 FOURTEEN, a Bordeaux blend of grapes from each of the fourteen appellations of the Napa Valley. Steve Reynolds, of Reynolds Family Winery, and several other forward-thinking people harvested approximately one ton of fruit from each of Napa’s 14 sub-appellations. There are some great vineyards being used here – Constant, Von Strasser, Duckhorn, Brown, Morisoli, Keenan – to name just a few! The resulting blend is one of the most decadent and compelling wines you can own. The 2005 harvest ended up to be one of the best on record, full of ripeness and lots of it! Growers and winemakers could actually smile and be cordial over coffee during the season which is rare. There was a unique balance in the flavor to acid profile that is not found but every several years. The entire valley, including all the sub-appellations benefited from Mother Nature’s gift. The wine is robust with a heavier mid-palate and should prove to be a crowd pleaser for sure! Only 1000 cases made.

 Venge Sangiovese, Napa Valley 2007

Aromas of strawberry jam, black cherry, rhubarb pie and a touch of allspice and campfire fill the nose. The palate is a flashy array of ripe cherry, cola and red rock candy. They employ once used barrels to offset the tendency of delicate varietals such as Sangiovese to be overwhelmed by oak. The overall is a savory and fruit forward wine, supported by firm acidity with structure that will help it age and continue to improve for 5 to 7 years.

Les Vignes de Bila Haut (Chapoutier) Cote du Roussillon 2008
The Domaine that makes the Les Vignes de Bila Haut (Chapoutier) Cote du Roussillon 2008 is owned by the well known Rhone Producer, Michel Chapoutier. The grape varieties are Grenache, Carignane and of course Syrah. Located in the small village of Latour de France, it is very close to the Spanish border, where there is a great deal of history related to the Knights Templar, hence the cross on the “t” of Bila Haut. The wine exhibits a distinctive pepper and spice aroma, with a follow through of round velvety red fruits like dark cherries and strawberries, finishing with a rich spicy note. The 2007 vintage received “89” points Wine Spectator, and “91” from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, and Michel Chapoutier feels that his 2008 vintage is better than the 2007. According to Robert Parker: “Throughout the southern Rhone, 2007 is the greatest vintage I have tasted in my thirty years working in that region... Nearly every producer has attained largely unprecedented levels of quality. Moreover, the vintage is remarkably consistent from top to bottom.  Spann Vineyards Mo Zin 2006
The 2006 Mo Zin from Spann Vineyards is an interesting but tasty blend - 42% Zinfandel, 30% Mourvèdre, 20% Petite Sirah & 8% Syrah. The Zinfandel, from several old vine vineyards in the Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Mendocino County creates a marvelous base of raspberry and blackberry flavor while the Mourvèdre adds a raspberry aroma and meaty/beefy taste plus the backbone necessary to make these combined flavors stand up in the mouth. This Rhone-inspired wine was made to be immediately enjoyable but will also improve and gain complexity in the bottle for 5 to 8 years after the vintage date. Part of the reason Mourvèdre is used in Chateauneuf-du-Pape blends is for its anti-oxidant properties that give long life to these wines. As these ages, more of the leathery/raspberry notes from the Mourvèdre will appear. It has a food-friendly, graceful balance between fruit and oak and matches well with everything from grilled ahi tuna to Italian red sauce dishes to lamb and red meats.

 Deerfield Ranch 2002 Super T-Rex
Super T-Rex is a Meritage style wine with an Italian bent. It has the forward fruitiness and lovely characteristics of a Sangiovese with the depth and complexity of a Meritage blend. Sangiovese focuses its flavor on the front of the palate, like a forward cresting wave. Cabernet Franc takes aromas and flavors to the top of the palate and into the nasal cavity where it creates a chocolate headiness. Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine middle structure and a long finish. Dolcetto expands into the lower sides of the palate completing an all-encompassing taste delight. The 2002 vintage was the best even-year vintage in decades. It produced elegant wines with perfect balance. In the Tuscan style, Super T-Rex was given extra aging time in the bottle before release to allow the flavors and tannins to marry and mellow. The result is a velvety smooth wine that will pair superbly with many foods, especially Mediterranean cuisine.

 A to Z Winery Night & Day Blend 2007
We were very impressed with the 2007 Night & Day blend from A to Z. Saturated dark purple/red color from rim to center that looks like a Bordeaux from a great vintage. The nose shows strong minerality and has complex initial aromas of blackberries, tobacco, pepper, iron, graphite, cassis and tar. With aeration aromas of cedar, Indian spices, bramble, boysenberries, blood orange, ripe plums and red currents emerge. In the mouth the attack is concentrated, structured and pure. As the wine continues to move across the palate, ripe tannins focus and bring balance to the young and generous fruit. The mid-palate is focused, strong and broad. At the end, a classic tannin/fruit balance gives the finish great clarity and astounding length. The final flavors end on a strong note of iron and minerality. Continuing the tradition of typicity, excellence and affordability demonstrated by Southern Oregon and A to Z, the 2007 Night and Day should drink well now and for 5 – 10 more years.

Cain Five 2005
2005 gave Cain Cellars plenty of “hang time” to allow the grapes to ripen gently. Unlike the yields on the valley floor, the yields in the Cain Vineyard were typically low. The 2005 Cain Five is their most restrained wine since 1999. The cool weather on Spring Mountain preserves the firmness of the tannins and the freshness of the aromas. Because of the long “hang time,” they were able to include 14% Petit Verdot for optimum color and structure. We expect this wine to age gracefully for a long time. The 2005 Cain Five shows the emphasis that they place on the palate feel: the texture of the tannins is extremely fine, yet distinctly present—like Shantung silk. The aromas are of fresh red cherries and exotic spices. It is gratifying to see how well this wine evolves in the open glass, which bodes well for the future. Today, you should decant the wine, and sip it carefully. Limited.

Terre Rouge Winery Enigma 2007
From Terre Rouge Winery, a beautiful Rhone blend - 55% Marsanne, 28% Viognier & 17% Roussanne – the 2007 Enigma. Enigma is made from fruit harvested from one vineyard site, Suma Kaw, planted in volcanic soil at the elevation of 3,000 feet. This high, cool elevation allows them to let the fruit hang for full flavor development while maintaining proper acidity. The vines grow on a vertical trellis with upward shoot and cane positioning for good fruit exposure to sunlight. Aromas suggest wildflower honey and acacia blossom with hints of tangerine and papaya. Flavors are creamy with peach, apple, and quince sensations competing for your taste buds. The finish is crisp with classic white Rhône stone (peach) fruit pit flavors intermingled with mineral tones from this rocky site. Enjoyable young, the wine also gains great complexity with bottle age.

Viña Cobos Felino Malbec 2008
Paul Hobbs Imports was founded as a way of bringing to the United States the wines that Paul Hobbs makes in Argentina. These are the wines of Viña Cobos; among them stunning Malbecs that have helped put Argentina on the world stage for this varietal. Their most sophisticated Felino Malbec yet, the 2008, carries a deep magenta hue and aromas of dark berries and anise. On the palate, intense, pure flavors of just-picked raspberries, black plum and graphite unfold in velvety layers. Exotic notes of ginger and white pepper carry through the mid-palate to intermingle with firm tannins and notes of cedar on the finish. 92 Points - The Wine Advocate

Tablas Creek Vineyard Esprit de Beaucastel 2007
The 2007 Esprit de Beaucastel, Tablas Creek’s flagship red wine, is a product of the exceptionally intense 2007 vintage, and combines the richness and structure of Mourvedre, the generosity of Grenache, the structure and mineral of Syrah and the brambly wildness of Counoise. It recently received 95-97 points from Robert Parker and 94 points from Tanzer's International Wine Cellar. The 2007 Esprit de Beaucastel is delicious and unusually approachable right now, with a complex nose of red plum, ripe cherry, fresh figs and candied orange peel, a velvety, layered palate with spicy plum and cherry fruit, pepper and nutmeg spices, and excellent breadth. The finish shows more mineral, plum, and spice, and a little gentle oak from the barrel aging. It is delicious now, if very young, and should evolve elegantly in bottle for 10-15 years or longer.

Seghesio Omaggio 2007
Seghesio Omaggio 2007 gets a 90 in Wine Spectator! Dark ruby in color with a enticing nose of black fruit, sour cherry, violets andtouch of kirsch, chocolate, clove and graphite. Black cherry, blackcurrant and plum with some pine and herbaceous notes on the palate. We liked the body and weight of the wine as well as the dusty and silky tannins. Also impressive were the mellowness of the Cabernet and the brightness of the Sangiovese. "Elegant and refined, with complex, understated loamy currant, sage, anise and blueberry, keeping a tight focus and ending with integrated tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Best from 2009 through 2015. 600 cases made," James Laube.

Bodegas Caro Amancaya, 2008
From 50 year-old vines planted in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina, the 2008 Bodegas Caro Amancaya is a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. With a deep core of black and red fruit enhanced by refreshing acidity and muscular tannins this wine never fails to impress! You’ll be delighted with the bright, saturated ruby-red color and aromas of cassis, black cherry, licorice and leather, plus a whiff of pepper. The Amancaya has the vivid raspberry and boysenberry fruit of a Malbec, along with the fine-grained tannins and nice framing notes of cedar, coffee and loam that come from Cabernet. Notes of vanilla and chocolate coming from the French oak. The finish is long and focused.

  St. Gregory Pinot Meunier 2007

The 2007 St. Gregory Pinot Meunier is one of only a small handful of red still wine Pinot Meuniers in California.  This early-budding, quick-ripening varietal has traditionally been grown only in France, where it is included in many sparkling wines.  This Mendocino version is their eighth vintage, grown for them by Roger Webb in an elevated vineyard setting in eastern Redwood Valley. The color is dark and smoky, with aromas of leather and spice, followed by flavors of soft, earthy black cherry.  The finish is very crisp and long, with just enough spicy pepper and firm tannins to allow it to go with rich foods such as duck, glazed ribs, marinated pork tenderloin or even steak au poivre.  This wine is very approachable now and will improve for at least 3 to 5 years in the cellar.  Extremely limited.

  Pellegrini Milestone, 2006

We have had great reaction to the Pellegrini Milestone 2006.  With the first winery bonded in 1933, the company’s history spans four generations, and traces its evolution from being a grape and wine merchant house to producer of estate-bottled Sonoma County wines.  Milestone was conceived by selecting special lots of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc to form a mosaic that would be defined by its depth of color, richness, complexity, and supple texture. With Merlot as the dominant variety, it is a stylistic nod to the wines we admire from Pomerol and St. Emilion, yet Milestone’s character is clearly the provenance of three vineyards located in the Russian River, Alexander, and Sonoma valleys.  The ripeness here is superb, showing overflowing richness but balanced flavors of milk chocolate, vanilla bean, black cherry, oolong tea and cigar smoke. This is a perfect wine for prime rib.

Trentadue Old Patch Red 2006, Alexander Valley

Named for the original 1896 plantings, Trentadue’s Old Patch Red has remained the all time favorite among legions of Trentadue fans for over three decades. Some of these vines are still producing today. Although the blend composition varies slightly with the vintage, the main idea of pre-Prohibition style of field blend based on Zin, Petite Sirah and Carignane remains the same. The 2006 harvest proved to be one of the largest in history and while "Mother Nature" cooperated, a large portion of the fruit became ripe at the same time. This created some interesting issues with picking order and tank space. The Old Patch is a serious everyday wine with soft palate and loads of flavors. The predominance of Zin in the blend brings in jammy, peppery, black cherry and strawberry aromas with spicy herbal nuances. Further aeration reveals deeper and more complex layers of plums, brown sugar, graphite and earthy, dusty undertones. The mouth feel reveals no hard edges, with a juicy middle but shows a solid tannin core suggesting a good aging potential.

  Graziano Coro Mendocino 2006
For the first time in U.S. history, a collaboration of 8 Mendocino vintners has set blending and aging parameters for wines distinctive to a region (ie. like the appellation controllee wines of Europe). Each winery created its individual blend based on the protocol and a panel of experts reviews it. Each winery personalizes the common label, which will be recognizable as Coro Mendocino, and bottles the wine in a uniform bottle. Graziano’s unique blend of old vine Zinfandel and three classic Italian grape varieties, Sangiovese, Barbera & Dolcetto, have come together to create a wine that has great structure and elegance. Aromas of violet, spices, and cedar weave through the vibrant raspberry fruit character, culminating in a harmonious finish laced with vanilla and toasty oak. The wine’s complexity and depth of flavor will continue to evolve with further bottle aging.

  Trentadue Chocolate Amore, Alexander Valley
This opulent dessert wine is produced from Merlot grapes grown on Trentadue’s Geyserville Ranch. Borrowing from the traditions of port making, they add neutral grape spirits to stop fermentation trapping a percentage of sugar in the wine. Once Chocolate Amore is finished aging and is ready for bottling, we infuse a tiny amount of natural chocolate extract to the final blend, creating the perfect marriage of food and wine. This Merlot-based, port-styled chocolate flavored dessert wine is great over vanilla ice cream or as a stand-alone dessert. You’ll be very popular when you bring it to the next dinner party!

  Monte Volpe Sangiovese 2006, Mendocino
The 2006 Sangiovese delights the palate and reminds us of Tuscan Sun. Sitting outside at a villa looking out over the vineyards and sipping one of the nicest Sangioveses ever. Smooth, silky, and just perfection in fruit clarity, this “baby brunello” is a treasure. Violet, spice, black cherry and smoked meat lead to a finish that is almost cappuccino like in its velvety mouthfeel.
