The Prisoner 2010
 |
| |
 |
This crazy blend - 44% Zinfandel 26%
Cabernet Sauvignon 18% Petite Sirah, 9%
Syrah 2% Charbono 1% Grenache – is
wildly popular and it’s a TV star too –
the people on Cougar Town seem to have
an endless supply! The 2010 has great
color with a deep garnet hue. The
aromas, which are intense and complex,
include dark blackberry, cherry, black
currant and cassis with undertones of
vanilla from new oak. On the palate, the
wine makes an impressive entry with
rich, bold flavors of lush berry, ripe
cherry, black plum and coffee. The wine
has a solid core of fruit, balanced by
bright acidity. The finish is long,
lingering and filled with soft, velvety
tannins that leave a lasting impression. |

L’Ecole 41
2008 Apogee, Pepper Bridge Vineyard, Walla Walla
 |
| |
 |
The 2008 Apogee, Pepper Bridge Vineyard,
Walla Walla, is a wonderful Bordeaux
blend - 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30%
Merlot, 6% Malbec, 4% Cabernet Franc.
Apogee is the point in the orbit of the
moon that is the greatest distance from
the earth; the farthest point or apex.
This name reflects all that they are
trying to accomplish with the wine,
reaching the ultimate in quality. The
Pepper Bridge Vineyard, planted in the
terraced remnants of ice-age flood
deposits, is one of the Walla Walla
Valley’s most reputable vineyards.
Apogee was the first wine produced from
this vineyard and shows its
characteristic spicy, bold and dark
fruit flavors with a rich structure,
well-integrated tannins and a long
finish. Boldly aromatic, this mature
wine has aromas of cinnamon and nutmeg,
earthy hints of sweet tobacco and
leather, and smoky dark fruit packed
with chocolate, mint and cherry fruit on
a richly balanced and integrated finish. |

Rotie
Cellars Southern Blend 2009
 |
| |
 |
The 2009 Rotie Cellars Southern Blend is
a blend of 68% Grenache, 16% Syrah & 16%
Mourvedre. Rhone varietals prosper in
the Walla Walla area and winemakers are
making full use of these wonderful
wines. Deep ruby colored, it displays a
sultry, smoky minerally nose, evocative
of a South Rhone red, redolent of
raspberries, cassis and garrigue (French
lavender). The flavors are thick and
penetrating, with the Grenache component
imparting unctuous fruit, underlain with
earth, minerals, bittersweet chocolate
and licorice. On the back, the texture
thickens with roasted berries and orange
peel on a deep ripe tannin finish that
shows fine fruit acids and a dusting of
spice and pepper. This is a WineStars
exclusive – it is not distributed, but
the winery has agreed to work with me so
I may provide it to you! 600 cases
produced. |

JC Cellars
Smoke and Mirrors 2007
 |
| |
 |
"JC Cellars Smoke and Mirrors 2007
brings another chance to work their
magic by blending vineyards, which span
California, 10 in total. The varietals
include Syrah, Petite Sirah & Zinfandel.
Über extracted, black cherry in color,
the wine clings to the sides of the
glass as you swirl, defying gravity,"
says Jeff Cohn, winemaker. Alluring and
mystical aromas of incense and sweet
pipe tobacco permeate the room, a touch
of crushed white peppercorns and roasted
sweet peppers. Flavors focus on
blackberry and black cherry, with subtle
hints of dates and figs. French vanilla
bean accentuates the finish that
definitely does not disappear. |

Benessere
2006 Buono Rosso
 |
| |
 |
The Benessere 2006 Buono Rosso is a
blend of 46% Sangiovese, 30% Zinfandel,
and 24% Merlot. This wine is all Estate
grown. Beautiful ruby color, perfume and
red fruit laden aromatics, along with
soulful and palate pleasing flavors are
the major descriptors of the Buono Rosso.
On first pouring, bright wild-cherry
scents jump from the glass, deepening to
ripe jam aromas, made more intriguing by
tones of new leather, roasted meat and
aromatic herbs, plus a touch of vanilla.
In the mouth the wine is medium
full-bodied, rich and velvety, with
flavors of red plums, nutmeg and dark
cocoa. With noticeable acidity and firm
texture, this Zinfandel is delightful
with grilled meats, tomato pasta dishes,
and and marinated pork tenderloin. |

Owen Roe’s
Sinister Hand 2010
 |
| |
 |
The story goes like this- Long ago,
during the 17th century, the O’Neill’s
and O’Reilly’s were two revolutionary
Irish families. They formed a rowing
competition to reserve rights to some
highly regarded land. The two rowing
teams agreed that the first to touch the
land, after rowing across the lake,
would become ruler of the land.
O’Neill’s boat was falling behind so a
member of the crew grabbed his own
sword, cut off his hand and threw it
ashore, winning the title to rule the
land. This land still remains in the
family. A dark story needs a dark wine,
which is why they created this blend or
71% Grenache, 24% Syrah and 5%
Mourvedre, typical of a traditional
Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The first sip of
this wine surprises the palate with
soft, supple flavors of raspberry jam
and currant. The midpalate opens up to a
complex layering of minty eucalyptus,
black pepper and leather and finishes
with a structured backbone of earth and
spice. |

Miner
Family Sangiovese, Gibson Ranch, Mendocino 2009
 |
| |
 |
Characterized by spicy plum and
cherry-cedar flavors, the 2008 Miner
Family Sangiovese, Gibson Ranch,
Mendocino is readily approachable with
its balanced display of fruit, tannin
and acidity. This Sangiovese reflects
true Tuscan attributes, yet retains the
just picked freshness attributed to the
cooler climate of Mendocino County. From
the medium color and gentle
cherry-tinged fruit to the generous
acidity - which works so well with
Italian cuisine - this Sangiovese
reveals black cherry, spice, cinnamon,
slight cola, and a little tobacco
flavor, producing a wonderfully balanced
fruit-to-alcohol finish. Made from
grapes grown in Mendocino near Hopland
by third-generation vineyard owner Bob
Gibson, this wine complements a wide
range of foods with a particular
affinity for tomato-based pasta dishes. |
