La Sirena Syrah 2005, Santa Ynez
The Santa Ynez Syrah is deep ruby-purple in color with beautiful aromatics of ripe cherry and plum with a bit of dried herb and earthiness. It is round and lush in the mouth, yet juicy and lively and at the same time, chock full of spicy, red fruit character, cranberry, and a touch of smokiness. I love the medium chewy textural element on the palate. Beautifully balanced, pure flavors, and good length; a wine to enjoy with a variety of savory or spicy foods. Always an easy drinking, easy to love Syrah. Why “La Sirena”? The name “La Sirena” means “the Mermaid “in Spanish and Italian. Heidi chose it because she was looking for something fun and magical (like wine) and because she loves to scuba dive as well as make wine.

Corvidae's 2006 "Lenore" Syrah
Owen Roe does it again. Like their other value labels, Corvidae packs a punch. “Corvidae" is named for the family of birds that includes crows and ravens. Crows have a long history in folklore and mythology. David was inspired to name the label Corvidae by the many crows that circle the sky over his winery in Yakima. "Lenore" is named for Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven." Corvidae's 2006 "Lenore" Syrah has great spice, bright fruit, deep purple hues, and gorgeous texture and is really a steal for the quality it delivers. Pair this crowd pleasing wine with barbecued baby back ribs, a hearty lamb stew, your favorite burger or just on it's own. Lenore Syrah is made from 95% Syrah and 5% Grenache. The fruit comes from Erickson Vineyard, in the Columbia Valley, and Six Prong Vineyard, in the Horse Heaven Hills.

Black Chook 2007 Shiraz/Viognier
The Black Chook 2007 Shiraz/Viognier is sourced from two of the best known wine growing regions in South Australia, namely McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. McLaren Vale has an unrivalled reputation in Australia and indeed the world, for growing Shiraz which is full-flavored, ripe and balanced. Located on the floodplains of the Angas and Bremer River about 70km south of Adelaide, Langhorne Creek is one of the older wine growing regions in Australia with first vines planted in the 1850’s. Traditionally Langhorne Creek is a red growing area, and characteristically produces Shiraz that is spicy, flavorsome and elegant. Recent years have seen white varieties becoming more established in the region, and the Viognier in the Black Chook is from Angas Vineyards in Langhorne Creek. Co-fermenting small amounts of Viognier skins with Shiraz adds a wonderful apricot perfume, at the same time as intensifying the deep rich color and velvety mouthfeel of the wine.

Bonaccorsi 2006 Syrah, Larner Vineyard
The Bonaccorsi 2006 Syrah, Larner Vineyard, is from a superb vineyard site that, seemingly regardless of the producer, tends to provide floral, blueberry, blackberry, and crushed rock characteristics. This big, dense, blue/purple-colored 2006 offers a stunning nose of acacia flowers, blueberries, and black raspberries, a full-bodied mouthfeel, sweet, silky tannins, and a layered, multidimensional personality. Andrew Rich Syrah 2005
The Andrew Rich 2005 Syrah blends fruit from five different vineyards in the Columbia Valley -two on Red Mt. and three in the Horse Heaven Hills-so perhaps it's that added complexity (or something) that makes this Syrah so approachable. Blackberries and other dark fruit swirl enticingly on the nose, with just a hint of pepper, toast, and black olive. The mid-palate is soft and quite lush, with a framework of tannin that seems to melt in the mouth. The wine is lively-that's the acidity talking-rather than ponderous, making it a great partner for rich fall and winter dishes.

Bighorn Cellars Syrah Sugarloaf Mountain 2004
Sugarloaf Mountain offers a unique terroir for the Napa Valley. Unlike warmer vineyards up-valley, the climate of Sugarloaf naturally provides a longer hang-time resulting in profound color and flavor intensity. Combined with a southwestern exposure and a rock-laden soil harvesting the sun’s energy, this extraordinary terroir delivers the exceptional ripeness necessary for both the power and complexity required for the focus of Bighorn’s Syrah program. Sugarloaf Mountain is known for producing deeply concentrated, full-bodied wines, and our 2004 Syrah is no exception. The deep purple to nearly black hue of this Syrah is indicative of its bold richness in body and flavor. Aromas leap from the glass with flirty blueberries and exotic spices that beg to be tasted - and the palate delivers with complex layers of dark ripe stone fruit, and blackberries. After aging for 20 months on 100% French oak and 6 months in bottle, the mouth feel is seductive and brooding with beautiful texture. Enjoy this wine today but save some for the cellar!

Davis Family Syrah, Guyzer Block, Russian River Valley, 2006

Also a 92 point wine in the Wine Spectator – the 2006 Davis Family Syrah, Guyzer Block, Russian River Valley!  Twelve years ago, Guy Davis planted 2 acres of Chave clone Syrah in their Estate vineyard that has grown into a cult favorite amongst Syrah fans. Inspired by the wines of Cote Rotie in the Northern Rhone, this cool climate gem is fermented with a small portion of Viognier grapes to boost extraction and aromas. This block named after Guy is always their last to harvest, usually into the first week of November. The wine always reflects a harmony between its Old World roots/techniques and the California sunshine in which it is grown - the combination is all about complexity - the aromas open with peppery red and black fruits that are enhanced by violets and sun baked herbs.  A smoky nuance will surface as it opens in the glass; the layers keep unfolding through the meal, showing its exotic side right through to the mouthcoating finish. This Syrah was also featured in the February 2008 issue of Wine and Spirits Magazine in their cover story "The World’s Best Syrahs.  440 cases produced.

  Qupe Central Coast Syrah, 2006

Amazingly enough, this is the 25th vintage of Qupe’s Central Coast Syrah bottling (first one 1982)! The wine has evolved tremendously over those 25 years.  This 2006 is 94% Syrah, 5% Grenache, and 1% Counoise. It comes from Santa Barbara County (54%), Paso Robles (34%), San Luis Obispo County (8%), and Arroyo Grande Valley (4%).  This is one of their best bottlings yet of this wine. The relatively cool vintage in 2006 allowed for long hang time and great acidity. The riper, forward fruit aspects of the Paso Robles fruit are balanced by the acidity and spiciness of the cool climate Santa Barbara fruit. This wine is made with early consumption in mind, but if you are so inclined, and since this is a special anniversary vintage, you can certainly put in the cellar for 8-10 years.  Barbecued pork comes to mind as the perfect meal with this wine.

  David Bruce Petite Sirah, 2006
Stretching in a narrow band from Santa Barbara to the San Francisco Bay, the Central Coast region is characterized by the cooling influences of the Pacific Ocean. The grapes for the 2005 David Bruce Petite Sirah come from several vineyards in Paso Robles and southern Monterey. The resulting components display notable differences, some exuding bright, spice-tinged fruit while others are jammy, earthy and dense. The blend in many ways exceeds the sum of these parts, offering blackberry, blueberry and white pepper aromas, with a supple and balanced feel coming from our gentle handling of the fruit. Limiting the influence of new oak allows the fruit to shine through, making this wine versatile with foods, and ready to drink now.

  C G DiArie Estate Petite Sirah, 2006
Petite Sirah contains generous amounts of tannin, color, and backbone. Most often used as a blender for just these reasons, it can be difficult to make a varietal wine.   Understanding these difficulties, Chaim constructed a winemaking plan to maximize the varietal characteristics and minimize bitterness and harshness. The most important part of the 2006 C G DiArie Estate Petite Sirah was to ensure the fruit had enough varietal character to complement the tannin and color.  Inky dark purple in color, the wine has an elegant nose that begins with blueberries and raspberries. Fruit gives way to cocoa and vanilla. On the palate notes of pencil shavings leads to mint, violets, smoked meats, and white pepper. The acidity in the long pleasant finish balances the tannins and ends with lingering fruit.   451 cases produced.

The structure is full-bodied with refined mouth filling tannins and finish that goes on and on.

Neyers Syrah, 2007, Old Lakeville Road
In the mid 1990s, the Sangiacomo family planted this vineyard, a mile or so east of the Petaluma River. It sits on a steep, south-facing slope that is almost a 45-degree grade in some spots. Its 12 acres are planted entirely to Syrah, approximately four acres each to bud wood sourced respectively from Cornas, Hermitage and Cote-Rotie. The climate resembles Carneros, with cool, windy days and chilly nights throughout most of the summer. These conditions, along with the dramatic terrain, keep the crop size low and the wine intense. The wine they made from the long growing season of 2005 is both dark and rich. It displays those fascinating bacon-fat and black olive aromas characteristic of the most expressive Northern Rhone reds.  and it's a remarkable wine. Dark colored, aromatic with that great aroma of spice and animal, as the French call it, the wine is just great Syrah!  1,155 cases produced.  92 Points – Robert Parker

Andrew Murray Vineyards, Tous Les Jours Syrah, 2006
Andrew Murray Vineyards has consistently turned out great wines for the last 10 years.  Named as “One of Santa Barbara’s finest wineries,” by Robert Parker, Jr. and the editors of Food and Wine magazine were in agreement when they named Andrew as the “Tastemaker of the Year” in 2004.  For the 2006 Tous Les Jours Syrah, he starts with great grapes from Paso Robles and the Santa Ynez Valley and uses the different climates to create a wine that is both fruity and spicy at the same time. Using his experiences with both new world and old world style winemaking, he makes the most drinkable Syrah imaginable.  Ultrarich, with herb-laced sour plum, cranberry and black cherry fruit that’s well-focused, turning plush and complex on a long, detailed finish.  Great for the fall menus of hearty soup and cassoulet.
