Hitching Post Pinot 2008, Cork Dancer
Since the film Sideways, Hitching Post's wines have become well known, and the quality of the wines has remained steady. The 2008 "Cork Dancer" is charming to say the least. It has great red fruit and floral character with beautiful medium acid levels which make the wine immediately approachable but also keeps it from falling flat and flabby like so many California Pinots do. Enjoy the lovely deep garnet color, the nose of strawberries and other berries, and a touch of tar. On the tongue it is lush strawberry, chocolate, coffee and fig. Lovely, balanced acidity and barely tannic.

MacRostie Pinot Noir 2008, Wildcat Mountain
The MacRostie Pinot Noir 2008, Wildcat Mountain is a great wine for your holiday celebrations! The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from the Wildcat Mountain Vineyard. Here the vines dig into the sparse volcanic soil and stand firm against the strong winds that race in off of the Pacific Ocean most afternoons. This fog-shrouded mountaintop vineyard is a classic Sonoma Coast site, cool and challenging, and produces wines of great distinction. Very dark garnet in color, with a big, dark, black cherry nose, it shows hints of root beer, exotic spices, dark chocolate, and toast. The palate is rich, juicy, and round, with more chocolate and rich, ripe boysenberry flavors. A wine with deep structure but not the slightest trace of harshness, its finish just goes on and on. 984 cases produced.

Ketcham Estate Pinot Noir 2009, Russian River Valley
In 2004, Ketcham Estate was founded to make wines from the heritage Pinot vines of a small Russian River vineyard. Dan Kosta of Kosta Browne was part of the original project and now winemaker, Scott Rich from Talisman, is at the winemaking helm. The 2009 vintage starts off with a lovely balanced nose of dark red fruits, currant and strawberry, with perfumes of French oak. The aromas of summer flowers, Provencal herbs and mineral nuances blend nicely with the red fruits and earth characters that are typical with mature vines. The palate leads with a firm, balanced, acidic structure. The texture is seductively silky and medium-bodied. The mid-palate has that RRV quality we love with a core of profound red fruits married with tones of earth, spice, mineral and the earthiness of the forest floor, making it wonderful for pairing with food. 93 Points, Pinot Report.  Fiddlehead Cellars Pinot Noir 2007, Oldsville Reserve
The much debated 2007 Oregon vintage is the challenge that gives pleasure to seasoned winemakers. There were plenty of wineries that panicked at the news of the late September rains and made the decision to pick prematurely. Winemaker, Kathy Joseph of Fiddlehead Cellars, was very comfortable waiting for flavor maturity. The wine gods were good to them and the clouds parted ways and the right moment came only one to two weeks later. Flavor blossomed and alcohols stayed in check. The 2007Fiddlehead Pinot Noir “Oldsville Reserve” is deliciously Burgundian in structure and will be enjoyed for many years to come! Superb aromas make this wine immediately pleasurable. Look for the dried cherries, “Oregon” earthiness, sweet pipe tobacco, and delicately fleshiness on the mid palate. This wine unmistakably expresses its classic Oregon roots with silky, smooth tannins, enticing fragrance and wonderful spice.

 Mara Pinot Noir 2009
This was a wonderful year and harvest for the 2009 Mara Pinot Noir. The beauty of the harvest and the making of this wine was that not much was done to the wine. This has always been the procedure at Mara. What turned out was a Burgundian style of complex hints of fresh mushrooms, black raspberries and cherries and a forest earthiness. The mouth feel is dense and rich with and excellent balance of all the flavors mentioned. This is a wine that will turn heads. As always, hand crafted, unfined and unfiltered and limited.

Siduri 2009 Rosella’s Vineyard Pinot Noir
Siduri makes Pinot Noir and that’s all they make. Sourcing grapes from some of the finest Pinot vineyards in California and Oregon, they have truly mastered the art of making Pinot Noir. We are enjoying the 2009 Rosella’s Vineyard Pinot! This Santa Lucia Highlands superstar vineyard is producing more complex wines with each year, and the 2009 is no exception. On the nose this wine is explosive with bright cherries, rhubarb and wet stones jumping out of the glass (as we have come to expect from Rosella’s.) Interestingly though, as the Rosella’s opens up there are scents of earth, wet clay and candied plums. To us, these are newer characteristics that are starting to show through more each year, and they are ultra-complex. This wine is full-bodied and plush, and the finish is capped off by a punch of silky tannins. A great wine to drink on its own, and very versatile at the dinner table.

 Porter-Bass 2009 Pinot Noir
Porter-Bass Vineyards sits nine miles from the ocean in a saddle between two ridge tops. The Russian River swings in a gentle oxbow around these ridges allowing the fog to drift to the foot of the vineyard, cooling the vines in the summer. The forest of Redwood and Fir that surrounds the vineyard protects the vines from strong winds. These people produce one of our favorite Zinfandels, but today we’re enjoying their newly released Pinot Noir. Biodynamically produced, the Porter-Bass 2009 Pinot Noir has rich dark berry fruit and refined tannins proceed seamlessly across the palate.  Walter Hansel Pinot Noir 2008, The South Slope
Walter Hansel was a lifelong wine enthusiast who had the vision to plant his estate's original 250 vines in 1978. Today, Stephen, Walter's son, has taken up where his father left off, pursuing his vision of producing world-class Burgundian-styled Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, all from the Russian River Valley. At Walter Hansel Winery, the emphasis is on low yields (a miniscule range from 1.5 to 2.7 tons/acre) for greater complexity. Since all their grapes are grown on their own property, they can exercise strict control in the vineyards, which are planted with 5 Pinot and 5 Chardonnay clones. Each clone was chosen for its specific acid and flavor variations. From the estate’s highest elevation Pinot Noir vineyard, the 2008 Pinot Noir The South Slope (all from Dijon Clone 777) boasts a dark ruby color as well as abundant amounts of dark raspberry and kirsch liqueur-like fruit intermixed with hints of forest floor and flowers. Tightly-knit in the finish, with a hint of minerality, and beautiful texture, it is a promising Pinot that should evolve for a decade." 91-93 points Robert Parker.

Dutton Goldfield Pinot Noir, Devil's Gulch 2008
The devilishly tempting 2008 vintage of Dutton Goldfield Pinot Noir, Devil’s Gulch produced wines of particular density which truly show the vineyard and appellation character. At Devil's that would be the exotic wild berry fruit and touch of leather that we feel is the hallmark of Marin County Pinot. Crystalline wild blackberry and spice lead the aromas, while a touch of mushroom, sweet caramel and nutmeg/ginger provide the backdrop. In the mouth it is similarly packed, showing saturated dark fruit and Asian spices that carry through to the finish. The 2008 has a particular plushness on the palate that we think distinguishes this vintage. While lush and ripe, its moderate alcohol provides a wine of balance, brightness and exceptional food compatibility. Don’t even try to resist the Devil!

  Canihan Pinot Noir, 2006
Planted in 1998, the 3.75 acre Canihan Sonoma Valley vineyard which borders on Los Carneros is comprised entirely of French Dijon Clones 115, 667 and 777. This vineyard experiences the full impact of San Francisco Bay’s cooling fog in the summer. Phil Coturri’s Biodynamic vineyard management practices along with dry-farming and cane pruning result in small yields (less than 2 tons per acre) of the highest quality berries. The 2006 Canihan Pinot Noir features aromas of raspberry, plums, violet and floral tones folding into black cherry and cedar as the wine is swirled. The wine’s texture is rich and full, with a deep, lingering finish.

Flavors lean towards the fresh raspberry end of the spectrum, with sexy mocha and complex forest floor nuances. As always, the Dierberg Pinot Noir features surprising grip and structure for such a ripe wine. Enjoy it now for its wild fruit and explosiveness or cellar for several years to bring out the subtle complexities lurking just below its surface. 92 Points Wine Spectator.

O’Reilly’s 2009 Pinot Noir is a great value.  The start is elegant, with bright red berries, purple flowers and earth in the aroma.  The vibrant and juicy flavors of raspberry, cranberry and hints of cherry make this a great sipper, as well as a great food wine.  It gains depth toward the finish, with brambly dark berries and subtle tinges of dried herbs.  Soft tannins and mellow spice combine with good acidity to make this a good value.

  Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir, 2008
There’s a lot going with the 2008 Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir.  For those who think that South Africa is too hot to be able to make world class Pinot Noir the folks at Hamilton Russell seem to have a pretty good handle on dealing with this most fickle of grapes. This is a beautiful rendition of the varietal. This is an outstanding statement of how good the vintage was and just how much Hamilton Russell has wrapped itself around making world class wines, both with their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This 2008 Pinot Noir is a real beauty. The nose gives full expression to the varietal while the palate follows through with that sleek, seductive, silky mouth feel that everyone looks for with just the right combo of earthiness and fruit. The nose brings forth notes of black cherry, spice, earth and truffle. The palate is medium weight with a silky texture and flavors of red berries, dark cherry, earth, truffle and a cocoa, bitter chocolate note on the finish.

Davis Family Russian River Pinot Noir, 2007
The Davis Family knows that Pinot Noir should be a sensual, alluring, somewhat mysterious grape. As the meal progresses the wine should be taking you on a journey - different flavors should continue to unfold - it should have a pretty, elegant side, but still give forth a richness that stands up to any dish - and this one is all that. Their vineyard is on a southeast hillside that takes in the soft morning sun but dodges the direct harsh afternoon sun - this exposure reflects itself by leaving bright acidity and a more elegant perfume in the wine every vintage. Bright reddish-purple color in the glass, followed by intense and penetrating aromas of Bing cherries, raspberries, strawberries, spice and cola. There are discreetly rich, slightly confected flavors that mimic the aromas. Fresh, clean and juicy with caressing tannins, refreshing acidity and an underlying mineral edge. A perfectly harmonious wine that is quintessential Russian River Valley Pinot Noir.

MacRostie Pinot Noir 2006, Wildcat Mountain
The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from the Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, owned by Steve MacRostie and his partners Nancy and Tony Lilly. Here the vines dig into the sparse volcanic soil and stand firm against the brisk winds that race in off the Pacific Ocean most afternoons. This foggy mountaintop vineyard is Carneros at its coolest and most challenging, but the vines produce fruit of great distinction. Dark ruby color, with aromas of black raspberry, clove, and coffee. In the mouth there’s loads of ripe raspberry, plus a hint of cinnamon-laced cocoa, like good Mexican chocolate. Very full-bodied, weighty and rich, but still light on its feet. The finish turns slightly toward cedar, but the fruit goes on and on. 600 cases produced

Miner Family Pinot Noir 2008, Rosella's Vineyard
The '08 Miner Pinot Noir is leaving us...utterly speechless. So subtle yet scintillating that Winemaker Gary Brookman likens this vintage to the great Pinots of 2004. With nuanced and abundant aromatics, and flavors of plum, nutmeg and cherry, it is hard not to drink this wine now (and you should) but this is a Pinot Noir that will age with grace over the next decade.
