Keenan Merlot 2006, Napa Valley
 |
| |
 |
Keenan Winery is located in Spring Mountain District ,
high in the Mayacamas mountain range above the town of Saint Helena.
Fifteen acres of Merlot vines have been planted in the rocky soils
surrounding the winery, and it is these vines that produce some of the
finest Merlot in Napa. Deep dark, brooding ruby color with a black
streak; powerful, full-blown ripe fruit aromas with a suggestion of
mountainous earth notes, and a fine hint of sweet barrel accents. This
wine has excellent depth and definition of fruit - medium to full
bodied, tannic and driven with strong density and strength, finely
structured for a big boy. There is an excellent concentration of fruit
with a long finish. The resulting wine shows intense aromas of black
cherry, blackberry, and cassis. Complex nuances of cocoa and coffee bean
emerge as the wine opens up. This is a “big” Merlot that will age for
many years to come.

Michel-Schlumberger Merlot 2006, Dry Creek Valley
 |
| |
 |
Several years ago, Michel-Schlumberger planted new
selections of Merlot imported from Bordeaux. They promised outstanding
color and vivid expression of the aromatic herb, fruit, and spice
flavors unique to Merlot. The 2006 vintage benefits in its deep color,
rich texture and an engaging aromatic profile. To further expand the
flavor profile, they included a little Malbec, with its unique expansive
fruit and an even deeper color. Merlot from their hillside has always
made a classic wine, a wine that improves dramatically with even a few
years in the bottle. In the great 2006 vintage, that structure is
significant. It will age well and will take only a few months to “loosen
up” for early enjoyment. The fruit aroma is forward and well defined,
balanced with a spicy aromatic element that suggests cedar. Try it with
beef or a savory stew that includes the earthy flavors of winter
vegetables.
