Fabulous Finds from Family
Winetasting!
We went to the Family Winemakers Tasting last Monday
and what a great array of wines we have found! Here’s a few and more
next week.
A ripe and complex vintage, the 2004 Tofanelli Zinfandel shows a
variety of characteristics ranging from peach, strawberry and uncooked
rhubarb to earthy black tea and pepper. The wine opens up in the glass
to reveal blackberry/raspberry fruit notes layered with pipe tobacco,
allspice and cedar. A bright acidity, along with firm tannins and a
broad range of flavors ensure that this is a wine that can be paired
with many different foods. $40.00
We especially enjoyed the wines from Lost Canyon
and the 2005 Pinot Noir from Saralee’s Vineyard in the Russian
River was spectacular. They chose the Dijon 115 and 777 clones from
Saralee’s Pinot Block to produce this wonderful silky Pinot Noir. The
nose on this wine is unbelievably inviting and it leads to a fruit
forward wine with light spicy red cherry and strawberry flavors. This
wine is extremely well balanced and provides a great complement to food.
350 cases produced. $42.00
We were happy to run into Mike and Brian Lamborn and to find out
the 2005 Zinfandel has been released. Winemaker Heidi Barrett's
tasting notes: "Deep black raspberry in color with wide open aromas of
wonderful Howell Mountain ripe fruit. The nose is loaded with jammy
raspberry, spice, black pepper, currants, and hints of toast and
vanilla. The flavors are very consistent with the aromas and the
impression on the palate is one of richness, ripe fruit, and an overall
silky mouth feel. The structure is big but not tannic or aggressive and
the finish has good length. This is an easy to drink, easy to love Zin!"
$37.00
Also, coming soon from Lamborn is their 2004
Cabernet – woo hoo what a wine! Once again, winemaker Heidi's
tasting notes: “This mountainside cabernet is very dark ruby in color
with lovely ripe aromas of blackberry, currants, black cherry, and sweet
toasty caramel and cocoa. It has wonderful purity of flavor and a
remarkable chewy texture that is very enticing. This is a big, elegant
mouthful of a cabernet with a lot of finesse and personality. Flavors
last for several minutes. This is a unique wine from the top of Howell
Mountain that definitely shows off the special flavor profile of this
estate vineyard. Very well balanced.” October release. $105.00
– special pre-release price $98.00 net until
Sept 15.
Another old friend was at the Family Tasting – the folks from Storrs.
The grapes for the 2001 BXR were grown in a series of plantings
located in the recently-recognized San Francisco Bay appellation. Each
of the classical Bordeaux varietals is represented in the blend… Merlot;
Malbec; Petit Verdot; Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The various
plantings are all located in Region II meso-climates where the heat of
the day allows for the formation of the cassis and black cherry notes
found in the wine; while the evening coolness promotes the tobacco box
and cedar hints that you will discover in the long, lingering finish.
This tasty number is deep garnet with a purple edge and has a delightful
nose of cassis and black cherry, with hints of cedar and cigar box. In
the mouth it is very big and full-bodied with layers of cassis, ripe
plum, cigar box, tobacco and notes of vanilla to round the palate. This
wine has backbone to spare and will age beautifully for many years to
come. $53.00
