Well, I love it when we get recommendations from
our customers. This time it was about the
Montelena Estate Zinfandel 2007. Wow! What a
great Zin! This newly released Zinfandel has a
very pleasing, bright, clean ruby color. The
nose is loaded with interest, from tobacco and
cedar-spice box to classic Zinfandel briar-berry
and bright strawberry on top. With a soft entry,
the palate builds to a big, jammy mid-palate
rich with barrel spice, clean tart blackberry,
and velvety tannins throughout. Sweet vanilla
notes lead into a smooth, ripe berry finish with
hints of passion fruit. $34.00
We’ve been great fans of Patricia Green Cellars
for a long time and the
2008 Pinot Noir Croft Vineyard certainly
lives up to our high esteem for wines from this
winery. Bright red in color, the musky red berry
and cherry aromas are complemented by notes of
violet and licorice. Firm, finely etched berry
and cherry flavors are refreshing and nicely
framed by silky tannins. It is a burly, black
fruited, masculine, rich, and intense wine with
a boatload of personality. As ageable as any
wine we produced in 2008. A seriously
interesting wine for those with some patience
and cellar space. The licorice and floral notes
repeat on the long, mineral-driven, nervy
finish. 91 Points – Stephen Tanzer. 430 cases
produced. $37.00
Here’s another favorite from the Family
Winemakers Tasting - the 2008
Violet Green Syrah, “The Bowl” offers a
seductive taste of Mendocino’s Alder Springs
Vineyard best fruit. Big, rich, and layered with
intense fruit, this wine is an expression of
what pure Alder Springs Syrah is all about. It
has a good backbone of dense rich dark fruit
with structure to match. Balance and penetrating
focus characterize this Syrah. $28.00
Cesar Toxqui is truly an example of the American
dream. He moved to Mendocino County from Mexico
when he was just sixteen years old. His first
job was tying down grape vines at the famous
Fetzer Vineyards. Working full-time and
attending school evenings and weekends he
completed his senior thesis on organically grown
grapes. Cesar strongly believes that fine wine
begins with fine grapes. The
Cesar Toxqui 2007 Zinfandel was aged for
twenty-four months in neutral French oak
barrels. Redolent in the black fruit flavors of
currant, black cherry and blackberry plus buoyed
by no small amount of grape tannin and smoky
oak, this offering will remind you of what a big
tasty Zinfandel should be! Winemaker Cesar opted
to blend fifteen percent Petite Sirah to
highlight the dark blackberry flavors that are
prominent in good Zinfandels. 168 cases
produced. $21.00
A Point Break (as distinct from a Beach Break)
offers surfers a unique experience because it
focuses the energy of prevailing swells (often
from a few directions) into a single wave with a
predictable and powerful path. Similarly, the
2007 Longboard Point Break Red focuses the
influences of a few red varieties (Syrah,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Carignane and
Zinfandel) and seamlessly integrates them into
an expression of aromas and flavors that reflect
the climate of Northern California. Bright and
lush red and black fruit flavors enrobed in
vanilla and mocha flavors that linger on the
balanced finish. $22.00
